Choosing from hundreds of different topics and narrowing broad topics down is not an easy task. I was able to pick my topic by writing down areas that interest me the most. A list of different ideas to choose from was handed to the class; from here, I saw topics on the Industrial Revolution in the U.S. I did some further research at home and came to the figuration that children worked during the Industrial Revolution and worked to an abusive state. This caught my attention and I decided to write about the children labor. In order to support my argument on how my topic fits with this year’s theme Rights and Responsibilities, much research had to be done to confirm the information was valid. Most of my research was done through the internet in various websites and links that offered images as well as documents, quotes, and short bios’ of some children who worked during this time. Online, I was able to find some websites that included books with further information available for me. This assignment is not one that could be done the night prior to its due date. First, one must choose how they will present the assignment and how they will get this done. I decided to create a website because it is a fun way to show a visual of the project; this way more people can view the project by typing in the website on the internet. Research and being able to work with technology are very crucial skills to have and gain along the way as the project is created. I learned how to better site my information and find various different websites rather than just a couple to gain more information on something. I also learned where I could find a free website generator and how to take my creativity to another level. Child labor during the Industrial Revolution relates to the Rights and Responsibilities theme because during this time the children were taken from a chance of education in order to work long hours in a factory with no safety regulations. It was the government’s responsibility to care for the children and pass bills to protect the children and all other workers in order for them to live a more healthy life.At the beginning when I chose my topic, I had no idea how severe it was. I couldn’t imagine that in our past, children were actually working 12-14 hrs. a day in a factory doing nothing but the same task with little breaks and only to get a pay no greater than a dollar. I have gained more knowledge on the topic and also on groups that fought for reforms to help the children out. In a way it helped me make a connection with my life and how lucky I am that I did not have to go through such harsh times. It made an impact on how history drastically changes. Child Labor during the Industrial Revolution is important to history because it was a part of history. It occurred during a time where the U.S was going through change in technology and advancing in many different ways. As a result of this, the government passed laws to protect the workers from their jobs. To this day, it is now illegal to have children under the age of 16 working as well as working more than eight hours without over pay. Jobs are more convenient and less of a handful for the workers and now children can receive an education and not worry about if there will be food on the table or if they will have to provide the food for the home.
